How does the dentist check the teeth at a kids check-up?

Using a small mirror and a fine explorer probe, the dentist checks each primary (baby) tooth for cavities and soft spots, and looks at the gums to make sure they are pink and healthy. How are the teeth cleaned and polished?
Once every tooth has been checked, the next step is a gentle clean and polish to lift away the soft plaque that brushing at home can miss. A small, soft rubber cup spins slowly with a mild-tasting polishing paste and is run over each tooth to clean and smooth the surface. Many children say it tickles a little, and the gentle buzzing sound soon stops feeling strange. There is no scraping and nothing sharp in a routine kids cleaning, just the soft cup and paste. Why is fluoride applied at the end of the sitting?

Using a small applicator brush, the dentist paints a thin coat of pale-amber fluoride varnish across all the polished teeth, and it sets within moments of touching them. The varnish helps strengthen the outer enamel and makes the teeth more resistant to cavities. Fluoride varnish is included in the World Health Organization list of essential medicines, which is reassuring for parents who wonder about safety. The whole step takes only a minute or two, and most children do not mind the taste. We will ask you to hold off brushing and very hard foods for a few hours so the varnish can do its work, then your child is all done.
